Fireworks season is a reminder to write down the pet-care plan

Fireworks season highlights the value of a clear pet-care plan. See how VisiTails’ pre-launch checklist improvements make room for flexible tasks.

When fireworks start, “just follow the usual routine” can leave a pet sitter with questions. Should the walk happen earlier? Where does the dog like to settle? Which preparations need doing before evening?

On October 19, The Independent covered Guide Dogs’ call to prepare dogs for fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night.

The charity’s own guidance turns that reminder into practical arrangements: walk before dark, prepare somewhere quiet to retreat, and make plans to stay with the dog. Dogs Trust similarly recommends arranging familiar company and adjusting routines around expected displays. These are details worth discussing with whoever will be looking after your pet.

The useful question for owners and caregivers is simple: how do you turn that conversation into a plan someone can follow?

That is a problem we are working on with VisiTails, our forthcoming pet-care app. It brings visit details, care checklists and updates into an organized workspace. Its latest pre-launch improvements focus on making the plan easier to put together.

The biggest change is a simpler care checklist. In the development build, an item can now have a specific time or be left as “Any time that day.” Caregivers can also add custom sections directly during setup.

That distinction sounds small until you write a real list. An agreed walk time may belong on the clock. Preparing the dog’s familiar resting area might only need to happen sometime that day. Requiring an invented time for every task adds detail without necessarily adding clarity.

The flexible option is there for tasks whose timing genuinely is flexible. Owners and caregivers still need to agree which instructions are time-sensitive; the app does not make that decision for them.

For longer stays, start and end dates can now be selected together in one calendar. New visits also get a default title based on dates and pet names, removing another field to fill in before getting to the care itself.

Together, these changes aim to make preparation feel more like writing a useful list. Some tasks need an exact time. Others need a clear description and an agreed day. The setup should make both easy to express, without asking people to fill in details they do not need.

Fireworks season makes the value of that clarity easy to see, but the same questions come up during an ordinary weekend away. A sitter needs the owner’s agreed instructions, a way to find them, and room to record what happened.

A checklist remains a communication tool. If a dog experiences severe fireworks fear or distress, Guide Dogs recommends speaking with a vet for advice and support.

VisiTails has not launched yet. We are aiming to reach the App Store in the next week or so, with timing still to be confirmed. Visit the official VisiTails website for launch updates.
